HiVE - Couch Co-Op Game Jam Entry

Hello folks :)

Had an absolute blast making this, truly. It took just under 6 days from the initial gitignore commit, to the submission to the Jam. Anywhere between 3 and 9 hours a day. No main menu, very little interaction, a super simple game that people can play cooperatively from a younger demographic was what I was going for.

Most of the development was streamed on Twitch ( https://twitch.tv/irishjohngames ) and I intend to add "highlights" for each day (edit: Here they are!: https://www.twitch.tv/collections/xgP5_DyByhejWw).

In the meantime here's a quick note on the focus for each day:

Day 1.

  • Setup Git.
  • Grab some Split screen New Input System setup goin - Used a tutorial for this, had done it once before, took around 20 minutes. Kinda incredible how easy it is in Unity.
  • Get some IK Leggies goin!

Day 2.

  • Had a quick look at Mesh Deformation - Had no idea how ridiculously difficult it was to "just" cut a mesh in half! Eventually got my head around the cutting part, but identifying and removing the correct face was a nightmare!
  • Gave up on that :D

Day 3

  • Completely switched to a Voxel system for the destruction of the city. This meant I couldn't do the UV stuff as I had planned (Grabbing the actual texture and adding it to the cut off pieces) but it was much easier to get my head around. This is where it got really really fun.
  • Voxels with rigidbodies flying around after hitting them with space lazorz was achieved this day!

Day 4

  • Added some enemies! Helicopters, Tanks and Turrets are your enemies in HiVE. They don't do much in terms of damage, they are puny hoomans after all, but they do push you around a little!
  • A new silly string weapon to destroy ground units and spawners, and an auto cannon to kill the air units.

Day 5

  • The Hive!! Depositing the "mass" collected by the players was added. Some nice ugly breathing for the hive & when its fed it grows! Awful :D
  • Alot of cleanup and bug fixes. Some UI wireups and trying to line up everything that does damage to interact with the destructable stuff.

Day 6

  • The deadline was extended a few hours after starting to work on it this day. It was really nice to have all that extra time :D I finished around 3 hours after the original deadline but it allowed me to add alot of fun stuff.
  • Post Processing
  • Fog
  • Graphical changes and updates
  • Wayyyyyyyy bigger city
  • Terrain painting!
  • A tonne of bug fixing and side tracking! A lot of fun on the stream. We went for 9 hours & spent most of the time messing around :D

Overall the amount of interaction and engagement this Jam was nuts. Loved every minute of it. During KiN's dev, the best thing was for sure messing with ragdolls and physics interactions like with the vortex. It just makes everything more fun and easier to work on when you get lost playing your creation and trying to make it more and more wacky with every day.

Be sure to check out https://twitch.tv/Jackie_Codes for some fantastic Godot Game Dev content! Thank you Jackie for hosting the Jam! Can't wait for the Next One!
